Arrival of a Russian Princess

On this day in 1928, Anastasia arrived in the US. Or did she?

The Demise Of Czar Nicholas II. When the family of Czar Nicholas II was executed by the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution, it was rumored that one daughter ~ Anastasia ~ escaped. Anastasia supposedly had diamonds sewn into her clothing, which made it act bulletproof.

Will the Real Anastasia Please Stand Up? Several supposed Anastasias surfaced over the years. One, Eugenia Smith, was still alive in the 1990s but refused to submit to DNA testing. The most famous Anastasia was Anna Anderson. She attracted many supporters and many deniers.

Was She Real or Was She Memorex? Anna Anderson never spoke Russian. But when she was spoken to in Russian, she understood and answered in other languages. She said she wouldn't speak Russian because it was the language spoken by those who had killed her family. Anderson spoke good English, German and French. She had scars that could have come from the night her family was killed. Anderson and Anastasia had other physical similarities.

Convincing the Courts. After she immigrated to the United States, Anna Anderson spent much of her life trying to prove that she was that lost Russian princess. Appeals were made for more than forty years, though Anderson made no attempt to claim the Romanov fortune.

Still a Mystery. Despite ongoing claims of fresh evidence and three feature films, the case remains a mystery.
